Adoption
Some women choose adoption because they are not ready to parent but are not comfortable with abortion. If that is you, or you are considering adoption for another reason, we can help you learn about the options.
There are three main adoption plans, depending on what feels best for you: open, semi-open, and closed.
Open Adoption
An open adoption plan allows you to have an ongoing relationship with your child. You can select the adoptive family and exchange contact information with them. You and the family decide together the level of relationship and type of communication.
Many open adoption plans allow for letters and phone calls, and sometimes in-person visits. Open adoption is the most common type because it offers the greatest flexibility, and you can remain part of your child's life.
Semi-Open Adoption
In a semi-open adoption, you choose the adoptive family. You and the family communicate, but all communication goes through a third party such as a lawyer or adoption agency. You can stay in touch with your child while keeping some privacy.
Closed Adoption
In a closed adoption, you and the adoptive family share no identifying information and do not communicate with one another. The courts seal the birth records, and you remain anonymous. Most adoptions in the United States used to be closed.
Making the Decision That Is Right for You
Placing a child for adoption is a courageous and difficult decision. Only you can decide if it is the right choice for you and your child. Many families would be eager to care for and raise your child as their own.
