After Abortion Support
Mental and emotional effects after an abortion are not uncommon. Each person reacts differently. It is important to recognize and care for any feelings you may have. We offer confidential one-on-one support to help you process your experience.
Possible Mental and Emotional Effects
Some people experience a range of emotions after an abortion. Possible signs of post-abortion stress include:
- Generalized guilt
- Generalized anxiety
- Denial and repression
- Depression
- Regret and remorse
- Flashbacks
- A specific or general sense of grief and loss
According to research from the National Institutes of Health, women with previous mental health concerns who have an abortion can experience higher rates of related symptoms compared to women who have not had an abortion. The Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion has also reported that some women experience sadness, grief, and feelings of loss after a pregnancy ends.
Healing After an Abortion
You may not have expected to feel a wide range of emotions after your abortion. Some people are surprised by how strongly the experience can affect them. You do not have to feel stuck.
